The sub-forum of "Internet Public Welfare and Poverty Alleviation: Eradicating Hunger and Poverty" of the Fifth World Internet Conference hosted by China Federation of Internet Societies (CFIS) was held in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province on the morning of November 8. Secretary-General Zhao Hui presided over the dialogue themed as “Giving the Full Play to Social Organizations in Promoting Charity for Poverty Alleviation through the Internet.” Representatives from 8 social organizations at home and abroad shared their successful experience in poverty alleviation through the Internet and discussed the role of social organizations and ways applied in poverty alleviation through the Internet.
To win battle against poverty, social organizations are of great importance.
Peng Lihui, secretary-general of China Electronic Chamber of Commerce (CECC), said: “As a national social organization, CECC would give full play to the advantages of its enterprise members and experts committee, as well as its advantages in information technology, to make Internet development, the largest variable become the largest increment for better serving China’s “Three Rural Issues” – agriculture, rural areas and farmers, sharing the fruit of information age with farmers. Sun Yi, executive secretary-general of the Tencent Foundation, said that as one of the world’s largest online fund-raising platforms, almost 90% of Tencent projects were about poverty alleviation, having raised more than 3.5 billion RMB. She said: “In the scope of Tencent technology, we will give technical support to poverty alleviation through the Internet as far as we can.” Sally Costerton, senior adviser to the president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), made an introduction to ICANN. As a non-profit international organization, ICANN is a global operated network in the service of the public good under the aim of “One World, One Internet”. One of its important tasks was to promote internationalization of domain names to make people in poor areas who do not use English have access to Internet. She added : “In the future, ICANN will continue to take advantage of domain name internationalization to promote the global popularity of Internet.”
Zhao Hui said: “At present, there was still a lot of room for online social organizations to help the poor, and all people need to work together. Poverty alleviation through the Internet was also the important mission of the CFIS. It therefore would continue to give full play to its own advantages, pool the strength of online social organizations, especially of those members to fulfill its social responsibilities through practical actions and to highlight its nature of public interest.
