Sub-Forum of "Internet Public Welfare and Poverty Alleviation: Eradicating Hunger and Poverty" of the Fifth World Internet Conference Is Held in Wuzhen

  The sub-forum of " Internet Public Welfare and Poverty Alleviation: Eradicating Hunger and Poverty" of the Fifth World Internet Conference is held in Wuzhen on November 8. The forum was hosted by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development and co-organized by China Internet Development Foundation, China Federation of Internet Societies (CFIS) and Social Participation in Poverty Alleviation and Development of China.

  This forum invited concerned senior officers from governmental agencies, social organizations at home and abroad, enterprises, think tanks and other relevant departments to attend and share their fruits and experience in poverty alleviation through the Internet, to set up platform for exchange between China and the world in terms of poverty alleviation, to jointly explore the way to make the Internet effective in poverty alleviation and development, to strengthen the collaboration among governments, social organizations and enterprises, to bridge the “digital divide” and release the “digital dividends”, and to provide the global poverty alleviation a Chinese solution.

  Guests like Ren Xianliang, vice Chairman of the Social Construction Committee of the National People's Congress and chairman of the CFIS, Hong Tianyun, deputy director of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, Ma Li, member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consecutive Conference and director of China Internet Development Foundation (CIDF) and Qu Sixi, representative of World Food Programme in China attended the forum and delivered a speech.

  Ren Xianliang said that it is the common long-cherished wish of the people of the world to eliminate hunger and poverty. The current situation of poverty alleviation in the world was not optimistic and still required the strong cooperation of international communities. As an active sponsor, practitioner and prominent contributor to poverty alleviation, China had found a productive path suitable for itself and provided continuously Chinese wisdom for poverty alleviation.

  He pointed out that with the rise of the Internet, the human cause of poverty alleviation had become more and more closely integrated with the Internet. The in-depth implementation of Online Action Plan on Poverty Alleviation in China had achieved positive results. Online social organizations were an important force in social poverty alleviation and an important link between the supporting resources and the rural poor. Since its establishment, CFIS had actively participated in the work of online poverty alleviation and would continue to give full play to its own advantages, role of overall planning and coordination in the future; organize Internet enterprises and online social organizations to actively participate in tackling key problems of poverty alleviation. It would integrate power, establish mechanisms, improve efficiency and innovate ways to continuously promote the development of poverty alleviation through the Internet.

  The dialogue of the forum revolved around three distinctive topics: government agencies should promote the implementation of policies and measures for poverty alleviation through “The Internet +”; giving full play to social organizations in poverty alleviation through the Internet; urging enterprises to fulfill the social responsibilities and to make contribution to poverty alleviation.

  As the moderator of the second topic, Zhao Hui, deputy director of the Bureau of Social Affairs under the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), and secretary-general of CFIS, said at present there was still a lot of room for online social organizations to help the poor and all people need to work together. Poverty alleviation through the Internet was also the important mission of the CFIS. It therefore would continue to give full play to its own advantages, pool the strength of online social organizations, especially of those members to fulfill its social responsibilities through practical actions and to highlight its nature of public interest.

  At the end of the forum, the contracts of one-on-one poverty alleviation through the Internet were signed and the fruits of social poverty alleviation through “The Internet +” were launched.
